BETWEEN THE PANELS: OPERATION GALACTIC STORM

Comic books are one of my drugs of choice. I have a genuine addiction to comic books. I can't stop reading them. I want to know as much about those worlds as possible. Super heroes especially are something I like. I have to admit that I am a big Marvel Comics fan, have been since first seeing the Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno Incredible Hulk tv show of the 1970's and 1980's.

I recently finished a sprawling epic from the early 1990's, an Avengers story arc title OPERATION: GALACTIC STORM. This was a massive crossover story that ran across every Avengers book on the market at that time. Avengers, Avengers West Coast, Quasar, Wonder Man, Captain America, Iron Man, and The Mighty Thor. It ran for 21 issues between all the books mentioned above.

The story takes place in outer space. Our sun has been flaring up lately, massive solar flares causing alarm among the scientists of Earth. Quasar, Earth's outer space avenger and cosmically appointed protector of the universe, investigates the strange phenomena. The solar flares, Quasar discovers, are results of two worm holes or warp gates just outside the sun. Two alien races, the Shi'Ar and the Kree, are at war and have been using the star-gates to bridge the distance between galaxies.

The Avengers are pulled into the middle of this war, the fate of Earth growing grimmer every time the stargates are used. The stakes grow larger as the plot thickens.

The story is written well and the characters are done justice. It's easy in a large story like this for some of the characters to be washed out, especially when you're dealing with several writers. In this case everybody is represented well and you get the sense that the writers are all on the same page and know the history.

A very good read. This story is more a cosmic event than an Avengers story. One that is referenced in future stories and still carries weight in the Marvel Universe. This story could also be called the first KREE/SHI'AR WAR. A little note to keep in mind, whenever there is a Marvel story involving a war between two galaxies in outer space, it's usually pretty good.

Overall Ranking: 6 out of 10. Solid.

Another reason to read this story is that it features characters who will be playing prominent roles in the upcoming Marvel movie Guardians Of The Galaxy such as Ronan The Accuser and Korath The Pursuer.
