HALLOWEEN HORROR DAYS ~ DAY 14: ZOMBIELAND

So I'm bouncing around a bit between film eras but sometimes it keeps the feeling fresh that way. This next one isn't strictly horror but rather a beautiful blend of gore and laughs. ZOMBIELAND is a joy to watch every time I see it. Woody Harrelson is kick ass and Bill Murray is hilarious!

If you haven't seen this horror/comedy gem here's the breakdown: The world has succumb to a zombie plague and has degenerated into a world of the survival of the fittest. We are dropped into this world where very few humans still exist. Those that remain are mistrusting of one another and extremely cautious. Those who remain have survived due to great survival skills and intelligence. We follow a group of four survivors as they travel across the country simply trying to survive and slowly learning how to trust and love again.

When I put it that way it sounds like a post apocalyptic romance, ha! (You know, come to think of it, it is a romcom set in a zombie apocalypse) But seriously, it is laugh out loud funny and graphic with the gore and zombie violence (something World War Z severely lacked). For modern horror it plays strongly on the audiences previous knowledge and experience with such stories. But it also plays well for first time Zombie movie viewers. I will say that the more familiar you are with zombie films the more you'll enjoy ZOMBIELAND.

The thing about this film that makes it so good is the sub-genre it falls into. Horror comedies are rare. And rarer still are horror comedies that work well. They make you laugh without making fun of the horror genre. Shaun of the Dead is one of the best. Dead Snow is another. Evil Dead II, Return of the Living Dead. The list is small but the ones that work are legendary.
