Imported from the great country of Norway, from director Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters), DEAD SNOW is one of the best discoveries I've ever made. I saw a little promo ad for the film six years ago. Zombie Nazis? Count me in!
Breakdown, a group of medical students decide to spend their Easter break in the mountains of Norway. A 45 minute walk into the mountains they come to a cabin. That night they are attacked by a battalion of zombie Nazis from WWII. That's it. And it is... AMAZING!!
First rule you need to know: Nazis are bad. Second rule: Zombie Nazis are the greatest badguys ever. Third rule: If there are zombie Nazis in a movie or TV show it is guaranteed to be awesome! This movie is 100% awesome and so so worth it. Among this list are the movies Blood Creek, Shock Waves, and the TV show Supernatural. Check them all out!
One of the reasons why this movie works so well is that the actors and filmmakers know exactly what they're doing. This film is an homage to the great horror movies of the past. Director Tommy Wirkola is a huge fan of the Evil Dead films, Friday the 13th, Braindead, April Fool's Day, and action cinema. If you've seen these films then you'll love this one. Dead Snow is brilliantly put together knowing exactly what it is and what it wants to be, namely a spiritual successor to all the aforementioned films above. It revels in what it does and strives to give you, the audience, the fun thrills of Evil Dead II all over again. All this film wishes is to bring a smile to your face and remind you how much you love horror movies. And that it does beautifully.
I can't rave about this movie enough. I saw it and instantly fell in love. It has all the cliches. All the 80's horror troupes are there. And instead of making you cringe when you see them they make you smile. This is what entertaining horror films are all about. The only drawback is that it lacks one of the main staples of 80's horror cinema: female nudity :(
