HALLOWEEN HORROR DAYS ~ DAY 2: SINISTER

Next up we have one of my new modern classics, SINISTER. Directed by Scott Derrickson, the director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose and slated director for the 2016 Marvel Studios film Doctor Strange, this is a simple frightening tale about seeing something that you shouldn't see, watching something you know you shouldn't be watching, and the consequences of it.

True crime author Ellison Oswalt moves his family into a house where a brutal murder took place. The crime was never solved and a young girl is still missing. Ellison decides this unsolved mystery will be the topic of his new book and begins immersing himself in the evidence surrounding the case. While exploring the attic he discovers a box of super 8 film reels and a crude projector. He watches the first reel late at night only to discover a shocking first hand recording of the murder. Mustering up the courage to keep watching he discovers each film reel is another recording of a brutal murder of families. He researches the other cases and discovers that in each event a young child has gone missing. The deeper he delves the more disturbing clues he uncovers and the presence of a ghoulish figure in each video.

Sinister is both frightening and extremely atmospheric. The soundtrack to the film is perhaps the creepiest horror soundtrack I've ever heard and it sticks with you. The imagery too is striking yet leaving much to the imagination. In this the film does very well at giving you shock and cutting away just soon enough to let your mind fill in the gory details. And the dark entity slowly seeping its way into the film is frightening and memorable.

The blu ray too has a lot of good special features on it. I just watched the director's commentary and it proved to be one of the best commentaries I've ever heard. The director talked about his influences both thematically and cinematicly. He name dropped a couple of movies and bands I need to check out, movies being "Klute" and "Devil Times Five." Bands being "Ulver" and "Aghast"
