HALLOWEEN HORROR DAYS ~ DAY 8: FEAST

"Who the hell are you?"   "I'm the guy that's gonna save your ass."

By now most of you know that there are more reasons to love horror movies than just the thrill of being scared. If you limit yourself to horror films that scare you you'll find yourself very disappointed quite often. Sadly (and I think you all know this) not every horror film is frightening. But there are more ways to thrill an audience than through just chills. A fun horror film can be just as effective and entertaining as a really scary horror film. FEAST is one of the most fun horror films I have ever seen.

Created out of a gimmick to help discover up and coming filmmakers, much like American Idol, Project Green Light was an idea backed by Ben Afflect, Matt Damon, Wes Craven, & Chris Moore. Low budgets and driven visionary directors can created some of the greatest products you'll ever see. Sadly half the time a low budget just doesn't get the job done. In this case though the film flourishes. Jason Mewes, Balthazar Getty, Henry Rollins, Clu Gulager, Jenny Wade, Eric Dane, Judah Friedlander, and Krista Allen round out a wonderful cast.

A group of unrelated characters end up at this bar in the middle of the desert miles away from civilization. A man covered in blood bursts through the door toting a shotgun and a severed head of something monstrous. He begins barking orders to lock down and seal the bar. Two giant clawed hands reach in and tear him to pieces! Suddenly everybody locks down and seals the bar. Thus begins a night of horror as the bar is besieged by a small group of hulking monsters with a taste for human flesh. The fight for survival begins.

Sounds pretty serious. The take on the film is slightly skewed in a more humorous slant. The dialog between the characters is snappy and witty. The humor is primarily situational but yet there are character reaction and audience reactions to gross disgusting images that just make you laugh and squirm. This film is so so so gross and gooey and gushy. It is bloody, fast paced, and action packed. The monster designs are grotesque. And the characters are great. Half of them you root for and the other half you can't wait to see die.

This is a fun fun film. I can't praise this film enough. I'd throw this one right up with Evil Dead II and Return of the Living Dead. There's a sub-genre of horror films that are so few in number because they are so hard to pull off. But when a film maker can pull it off it something truly amazing.
