"If A Nightmare On Elm Street gave you sleepless nights. And if Halloween made you jump at every shadow. And if every Friday The 13th was more frightening than the others... then beware..."
Okay, I know it's a Christmas movie but it is also a film to be celebrated in October... or lamented. SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT is a terrible terrible movie but also one that falls into the guilty pleasures category. It is a straight up slasher film from the early to mid 80's following on the coattails of such successes of Friday The 13th and Halloween. There isn't a while lot of novelty in the film save that fact that it is so very 80's. Which is a good thing if you like 80's horror films.
Here's the breakdown. Billy and Ricky, two brothers on their way to see Grandpa for Christmas with their parents, are attacked by a homicidal Santa Claus on the road. Their parents are killed and the maniac is gunned down by police. Billy and Ricky are sent to foster care. Billy grows up thinking that when you've been bad Santa will punish you. When Billy grows up he sees a lot of bad things happening. Billy's mind breaks, he dresses as Santa and goes on a killing spree until gunned down by police. That's it. Seriously.
It's bloody. Gory. And there's a lot of nudity. 80's B-Scream Queen Linnea Quigley (Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons) makes an appearance. Leo Geter (Halloween 6, The Stand) also shows up, along with Will Hare (Old Man Peabody from Back to the Future) and Lilyan Chauvin (Predator 2), a who's who of bit players from my past favorite films.
This is a fun film for the unabashed shamelessness and tastelessness contained therein. It is best viewed with friends with beers and lots of laughs. If you watch it on your own you might get some enjoyment out of it but most likely you'll be pounding your head against the wall cause this movie is so bad. This is a social film. Watch responsibly.
