TOP TEN MARVEL COSMIC HEROES

TOP TEN MARVEL COSMIC HEROES

The Marvel Universe is a multi-faceted world.

There's the Street Level with heroes like Spider-Man, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Punisher, and so on. There's the World Level with characters like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and the Fantastic Four. The Supernatural Level with Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Blade, and Morbius. Then there's the X-Men which are a complete world of their own. These various levels all exist in the same Marvel Universe, occasionally crossing over into one another. Sometimes Spider-Man saves the world, not just the streets. And sometimes the Fantastic Four save the universe.

And that's the beauty of a well rounded fictional world. As a reader you can go anywhere and everywhere. I have friends who can't get enough of the Street Level heroes like Spider-Man and Daredevil. I have friends who love the X-Men. And then I have friends who love the cosmic outer space corner of Marvel.

I enjoy most aspects of Marvel, some in smaller doses and some I can't get enough of. My personal favorite facets of the Marvel Universe are the Supernatural realms and the Cosmic realms. I just can't get enough of Marvel's outer space epics. And thanks to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies it looks like Marvel Cosmic is here to stay.

In celebration of the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, I've compiled a list of my personal favorite Marvel cosmic heroes.

Disclaimer: These are my personal favorite cosmic heroes. This list doesn't include teams like the Guardians of the Galaxy or the Starjammers. This list is of primarily solo heroes or heroes who at one time or another where defending the cosmos all on their lonesome.

For a decent list of the cosmic teams check out the list of my TOP TEN FAVORITE MARVEL SUPER HERO TEAMS.

As usual I've included a bonus!

Enjoy!

#11
ROM ~ SPACEKNIGHT

Rom is the greatest hero of the Space Knights of far off planet Galador. Rom earned his reputation during the great war against the Dire Wraiths, the eternal enemies of Galador. Rom gave up everything to battle the Dire Wraiths, following them to the farthest reaches of space to a tiny blue planet called Earth. There he fought with Earth's mightiest heroes against the Dire Wraiths, saving our planet from conquest. After the final defeat of the wraiths Rom set out to return to Galador, finding his homeworld in civil strife. Eventually Rom brought peace to his planet and became its king.

Rom started off as a toy from Parker Brothers. They named and designed the character. In partnership with Marvel Comics, writer Bill Mantlo created the story and wrote Rom's saga. Rom's comic book ran for 80 issues including annual specials. During that epic run Rom was integrated into the Marvel universe and even led a massive crossover event called Dire Wraiths War. Sadly Marvel Comics no longer has the rights to continue Rom's saga, the rights belonging to Hasbro Toys. But the legacy left by Rom has continued through the Space Knights of Galador. Even if Marvel doesn't own the character, they do own Galador, the Dire Wraiths, and the Space Knights. And Rom's long lasting comic book created a generation of fans and established Rom as one of Marvel's greatest cosmic heroes.

During the first half of the 1980's Marvel cancelled virtually every cosmic title in their catalog, all save for Rom. Rom existed as the solo survivor of Marvel's cosmic books. We fans of Marvel cosmic owe Rom a debt for keeping the cosmic corner of Marvel alive during a very dark time for Marvel's cosmic characters.

SUPER SKRULL

The universe is a big and scary place. Sometimes a powerful enemy is enough to turn a foe to a friend. Kl'rt, the Super Skrull, was the most powerful warrior in the Skrull Empire. He was given all the powers of the Fantastic Four for the purpose of defeating the Fantastic Four and paving the way for the Skrulls domination of Earth. He's battled nearly every hero on Earth and has been a villain for the majority of his career. But when Annihilus and his armies invaded our universe the Skrulls homeworld was destroyed, along with Kl'rt's son.

This devastating event caused Kl'rt to reevaluate his life. He joined forces with once hated enemies, Ronan of the Kree, the Silver Surfer, and Nova to save the universe from annihilation. From that point on the Super Skrull became a force for good in the galaxy. When the Skrulls secretly invaded Earth, Kl'rt fought against them. In the aftermath of the Skrull Empire's destruction he became the new leader of the empire and fought alongside the Kree and the Shi'Ar to save the universe. The Super Skrull was a cool character as a villain but he became even better as a hero.

#9
GLADIATOR

Gladiator is the praetor of the Shi'Ar IMPERIAL GUARD, the Shi'Ar Empire's protectors and mightiest heroes. The Shi'Ar are an imperialistic society, conquering other planets and adding them to their empire. As part of an imperialist empire Gladiator has often been on the wrong side of Marvel's greatest heroes like the X-Men, the Inhumans, and the Fantastic Four. During the War of Kings event Gladiator became the Majestor and new emperor of the Shi'Ar. Gladiator turned the empire from conquerors to defenders of the universe. Gladiator joined the universe's greatest heroes, saving entire galaxies and all reality from destruction.

I don't know if you noticed the resemblance but Gladiator is supposed to be a riff on DC's Superman. Even his real name, Kallark, sounds an awful lot like Kal-El. He can fly, has super strength, eye-beams, and is nigh invincible just like Superman. He may have started off as a copy of Superman but over the years he has been developed into a great hero all on his own. Gladiator as a villain was terrifying, but as a hero he's one of the greatest forces for good in the universe. Certainly one of my favorites.

#8
RONAN THE ACCUSER

Because of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie most everyone only knows Ronan as a villain. And for a long time he was a villain. In 2006 Marvel released a story called ANNIHILATION. Like the Super Skrull above, the hordes of Annihilus put the Kree galaxy in jeopardy. Ronan, along with heroes like Star-Lord, Nova, and Captain Marvel, found themselves with a common enemy. To protect the Kree Empire Ronan allied himself with the galaxy's greatest heroes to ultimately save the universe. From that moment on Ronan became a force for good in the universe.

After the Annihilation War Ronan became the ruler of the Kree Empire. Together with the Guardians of the Galaxy he battled against Ultron and the Phalanx. Then he married the Inhuman hero Crystal, battled against the Shi'Ar Empire, and eventually saved the universe from an invading cancerous universe. So while he was originally a villain, much like Avengers Black Widow, Hawkeye, and others, Ronan is now one of the greatest and one my favorite cosmic heroes in the Marvel universe. His heroic credits are quickly outnumbering his villainous credits.

#7
BETA RAY BILL

Beta Ray is an artificial construct created to protect the Korbinites, an alien race of people nearing extinction. Mistaking the mighty Thor for a threat to his people, Beta Ray battled the thunder god with all his strength. During the battle Beta Ray picked up Mjolnir, Thor's enchanted hammer. Immediately Thor realized he had a powerful ally in Beta Ray. Odin gifted Beta Ray with a hammer worthy of the power of Thor, a hammer called STORMBREAKER. Now even more powerful, Beta Ray Bill protects his people on their pilgrimage through space in search of a new planet in which to live.

Beta Ray Bill is essentially an outer space Thor. He's a truly good person worthy to wield Mjolnir. He's fought in great Asgardian wars including Ragnarok. He's battled against Galactus and his Heralds. And he was a part of the galactic super team, the Annihilators, taking on the gravest threats to the universe. He has a unique and cool design, garnering a lot of "horse-face" remarks. Beta Ray Bill is one of my favorite cosmic heroes.

#6
STAR-LORD

Before he lead the Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill was a solo hero for sometime. During those days he was more serious and certainly not the fun-loving "fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants" hero. He fought for and protected the galaxy all on his own. He once allied himself with Thanos and Gladiator to stop a sentient Cosmic Cube from destroying the universe. Star-Lord banded together with Nova, Ronan, Super Skrull, and more to stop what would become known as the Annihilation War.

After yet another nigh universe ending threat, it was Star-Lord who brought the universe's greatest heroes together to help defend the universe. Not only did he bring this timeline's Guardians of the Galaxy together but it was also his plan to form the Annihilators. Even while a part of a team, Star-Lord was enacting many plans in an effort to safeguard the galaxy. Before the Guardians of the Galaxy movie turned him into a cheese ball dancing queen, Star-Lord was a firm favorite of mine and one of Marvel's greatest cosmic heroes. For better or worse, depending on your personal preference, Star-Lord is less a solo hero and more of a team-player goofball like the movie.

He's more of a joke now in comic books rather than a hero who actually does any good. It's weird, but ever since the 2014 movie Marvel Comics is pushing his character as more of a comic relief and almost completely ineffectual as a hero.

#5
QUASAR

The cosmic entity Eon granted Captain Mar-Vell the role of Protector of the Universe. After Mar-Vell died Eon needed to appoint a new hero as Protector of the Universe. That hero was a SHIELD agent named Wendell Vaughn. When Wendell placed two cosmic weapons on his wrists, a pair of Quantum Bands, Wendell became Quasar. The Quantum Bands allowed him to harness and manipulate Quantum Energy, creating constructs and weapons. Eon charged Wendell with one task: find and defeat a cosmic assassin who was intent on killing Eon herself. The assassin turned out to be a cosmically empowered madman named Maelstrom and the battle to defeat Maelstrom nearly ended with the destruction of reality.

Eon's appointed Protectors of the Universe were usually charged with preventing only one major universal catastrophe. Mar-Vell was appointed to stop Thanos (during the Cosmic Cube incident). Wendell was appointed to stop Maelstrom. Even with his task completed Wendell continued to save the universe time and time again against such forces as the Starbrand, Annihilus, the Cancerverse, and even the return of the Magus. At one pointed he was a part of a group of the most powerful heroes in the entire universe, a group called The ANNIHILATORS.

I just recently read all of Quasar's adventures and he has become one of my favorite characters and one of Marvel's best kept secrets.

#4
ADAM WARLOCK

A group of scientists known as the Enclave created an artificial man. By mistake their machines channeled mysterious cosmic energies, imbuing their creation with life and nigh limitless cosmic power. The artificial man became known as Adam Warlock. It took Adam some time to grasp the extent of his powers and realize his purpose. That purpose came when Adam met the High Evolutionary, a vastly powerful being with a god complex. High Evolutionary gave Adam an Infinity Stone, the Soul Gem, and charged him with task of championing life as a cosmic savior.

Adam Warlock is one of the most enigmatic and complex characters in the Marvel universe. He has died and come back many times. And each time he has returned from the dead he is a little different in personality and power set. His future self is ultimately corrupted, transformed into a power crazed villain calling himself the Magus. A young and still heroic Adam encounters his crazed future self at one point. In order to prevent the Magus from ever occurring Adam travels forward in time ever so slightly and kills himself. Later Adam is resurrected to help take down Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet.

To say Adam Warlock's story is "different" is an understatement. Written primarily by Jim Starlin, once you start diving into Warlock's stories you quickly discover that there is nothing else like it. And the Marvel universe is all the better for Adam Warlock's presence.

#3
CAPTAIN MAR-VELL

Mar-Vell has sort of a mythic presence in the Marvel universe. He was the first Marvel super hero to really go cosmic in his comic book. Created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan in 1967, Mar-Vell was a Captain in the Kree military sent to spy on Earth. Thanks to a woman named Carol Danvers, Mar-Vell came to care for Earth and its inhabitants. He rebelled against the Kree and fought to save Earth.

The cosmic entity known as Eon gave Mar-Vell the power of cosmic awareness and charged him with the mission of protecting the universe. His first battle as Protector of the Universe was against the Mad Titan, Thanos. Thanos defeated the entire Avengers and was moments away from achieving absolute power when Mar-Vell defeated him. Mar-Vell saved all the heroes and the universe from perishing at the hands of Thanos. As a result the heroes look up to Mar-Vell.

And the legacy of Captain Marvel continues. After Mar-Vell's death, his son Genis and later his daughter Phyla both took up the mantle of their father as defenders of the universe. The legend of Mar-Vell still endures. Mar-Vell, Genis, and Phyla are not just some of my favorite cosmic character but are among my favorite Marvel characters altogether.

And then there's the woman who changed Mar-Vell's life: Carol Danvers. By accident Carol was given Mar-Vell's powers and she took the super hero moniker MS MARVEL. More recently Carol changed her super hero title, taking up the mantle of Captain Marvel herself. Personally I like her new costume as Captain Marvel but I like her stories when she was Ms. Marvel far more.

#2
NOVA

Richard Rider, not Sam Alexander. Just so we're clear, I have no love for Sam Alexander.

Nova is one of those characters that evolved over time and years. Like many of the cosmic heroes on this list, he didn't start as a cosmic hero. His powers were cosmic in origin but his story was Earth based. When Richard went into space he began unlocking his full potential. Reading his entire comicography you see him evolve from a young man and somewhat naive hero into a grizzled veteran capable of saving the universe all on his own.

When the cosmic corner of the Marvel universe was revived in the mid 2000's both Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy received new leases on life. Nova, of them all, was the real breakout hero among them and it was during that time in which Nova became an absolute favorite of mine. It's interesting that Marvel chose the Guardians of the Galaxy for a movie rather than Nova, when it was Nova who arguably was the more successful of the two.

#1
SILVER SURFER

Simply put, there would be no Marvel cosmic without the Silver Surfer. While characters like the Fantastic Four and Thor had stories exploring outer space and the cosmos occasionally, the first landmark cosmic story in Marvel was The Coming of Galactus. That story introduced the world to the Silver Surfer and the devourer of planets, Galactus. For a long time too, the Silver Surfer was Stan Lee's favorite character and it was years before he let anyone else write the Surfer but him.

Silver Surfer has long been a favorite character of mine. I discovered the character as a kid and he became an instant favorite. I had never read stories like his dealing with such incredible powers and such a scale and scope. Cosmic stories are truly limitless, wild, and imaginative. The Silver Surfer is one of the finest examples of how awesome the cosmic universe is. The Silver Surfer is the reason I even started exploring Marvel's cosmic realms. And he along with the others on this list is why I love the cosmic Marvel universe as much as I do.

And there you have it! Do you agree? Disagree? Feel free to comment and list your own favorite cosmic heroes, Marvel or otherwise.

I hope you all enjoyed the list and I hope some of you enjoy Marvel's cosmic characters like I do.
