KAIJUOLOGY: GUIRON

Subject: Guiron

Documentation: Gamera Vs Guiron (1969)

History: Not much is known about the strange beast which has been named Guiron. The following account is from that of two young boys, residents of Japan. Nearly all the known information on Guiron is solely derived from this account. The validity of the boys story can only be speculated on however, several citizens witnessed the boys return from space within an actual alien space craft of unknown origin, the kaiju Gamera carrying the ship with the boys inside within his mouth. Below is their story.

One evening the two young boys in rural Japan spied a flying saucer landing in a field a few miles from their home. The following day they rode their bikes to the field and found the seemingly uninhabited space craft and foolishly climbed aboard. The ship remote piloted back into deep space with the boys in tow. Gamera, while flying through the cosmos, noticed the ship and the two boys inside. He followed them to an alien planet with the exact same speed and rotation as the Earth on the opposite side of our sun (rendering it invisible to Earth's astronomers since it is always behind the sun from our point of view).

There the boys were witness to the last remaining ruins of an advanced civilization. In addition to two aliens resembling human females they were witness to a creature of kaiju proportions with a massive knife-like protrusion from its head. This creature was designated Guiron by the two alien females. A cyborg creation of the advanced civilation, a marriage of bioengineering and robotics, Guiron was created to defend this "Counter Earth" from other kaiju threats. The beast was reportedly controlled by the aliens to do their bidding. The aliens kept Guiron contained in a gargantuan chamber beneath a river. The river was then drained, the chamber opened, and Guiron was released.

The first appearance of Guiron was in response to an outer space species of Gyaos (apparently the same breed that has plagued Earth several times and apparently the kaiju that devastated their entire world). The main weapon of the kaiju Gyaos, its sonic beam, spewed from its mouth. This weapon proved ineffectual against Guiron, the beast deflecting the beam off it's blade-like horn. Then with his razor sharp protrusion Guiron sliced and dismembered the "Space Gyaos" into dozens of kaiju chunks.

Next he fought the guardian of the universe himself, Gamera! The battle proved titanic in scope amidst the ruins of an alien city. Guiron's knife-head proved sharp enough to cut through Gamera's shell and easily cut through Gamera's flesh. Guiron unleashed one more new power, a pair of gigantic shuriken-like projectiles housed at the base of his protrusion. Gamera was seemingly defeated sinking to the bottom of a lake nearby. Gamera returned for a second round however, jammed a massive explosive into Guiron's head, and rendered the beast inert.

Review: Out of all the kaiju in existence Guiron is one of the most ridiculous. His design is rather simple, a reptilian quadruped with a giant knife for a head. His design has since become a classic, even emulated by the kaiju Knifehead featured in 2013's blockbuster film PACIFIC RIM. I have grown to like Guiron and enjoy his rumble with Gamera. The Gamera movie itself isn't that great but the kaiju throwdowns are fun.
