HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13TH!

34 years ago today, Friday June 13th 1980, a film came out in theaters for the first time and that film was destined to become legendary...

FRIDAY THE 13th.

I'm starting today in celebration with some bloody breakfast in blu ray high definition! The uncut international version too (a few more seconds of blood spurts here and there cut out of the American release).

Please join me today by watching a film in the series and celebrating why Friday the 13th is good luck, not bad luck.

It wasn't the first film to do what it did. It wasn't even revolutionary. But what it did, it did well. And for some reason or another... it simply clicked with the audience. They went to the theater again and again to see it. Before long it became one of the most successful films of the year, beating out The Shining and The Empire Strikes Back.

FRIDAY THE 13TH was a phenomenon that no one could quite explain. It touched audiences on a primal level, a relateable tale. The movie isn't as scary as Halloween nor does it hold up as well. But what it did that Halloween didn't... was impressive gore! The bloody violent acts were never as vivid and gruesome as they were in Friday the 13th. Of course we all know its make believe. Much like the SAW films of today, people went to this movie over and over to see the shocking scenes and wonder, "How did they do it?"

Halloween was the first modern slasher film. Friday the 13th popularized it and set the horror genre on fire! Even though Friday was a copy of Halloween, Friday spawned its own endless amounts of copies and thus the Slasher film was born! That's what makes this film so special. But the destiny for Friday the 13th was yet to be realized...

The first film isn't my favorite in the series but it still stands as one of the most potent in the series! Plus Kevin Bacon is in it! The blu ray looks great too.

  1. The above picture is by artist Jeff Zarnow. I love his art on horror t-shirts and the Godzilla comics by IDW Publishing
