JANUARY 2026 UPDATE:

We've started off the new year strong. We've made a lot of progress of our next novel this month. The words were pouring out and a grand sequence that was being worked on for months was finally completed.

This was the biggest, most intricate, and meticulously planned out sequence I've ever written. It is both relieving and exhilarating to have it done. Following that, the next sequence, considerably smaller in scale, but no less important was finished as well. 

As I was writing both of these sequences, I could feel the energy and momentum coming through. My fingers were itching as I drew nearer to the climax of both, feeling like I couldn't write fast enough. When this book is at last in your hands, my hope is that the excitement I was feeling while writing it will come across on the page to you, the reader. 

I can't tell you how amazing it feels, having put these scenes down on paper, scenes that have been living in my head for a decade or more. These moments in the story are what we read and write for, these are the moments that make the experience all worth it.

There's still more to do before the manuscript is finished, but I can't wait for the day when this story is published and you all get the chance to read it.

But rest assured, we're not stopping there. We haven't spent the last few months kicking back with a good book, beer and pretzels (well, maybe a little bit). We've been hard at the next project coming your way. Keeping you of the blood faith updated on what's coming in 2026, we're well into the next novel. The first draft of the next novel is complete and we're hoping to get another draft done in the coming months (shooting for mid 2026). Then, blood gods willing, it'll be ready to send to our editor! To break it down, our goals for 2026 are: 1: Getting the new draft finished 2: Sending the manuscript off to edit 3: Implementing the edits 4: More beer and pretzels 5: Get started on the final draft to be published! DEFACER AUTHOR CHRONICLES: Story Craft #4 - NOTE TAKING

 

Story Craft #4

The devil is in the details, so, take notes.

Notes are the blueprints, where it all begins. Whether it’s the early stage crafting my story, the research phase, the second draft, or the final edit, I’m taking notes. Some writers can remember every note, detail, edit, and addendum. Me? I take down notes.

A pen and paper, a computer document, and on my phone in the notes app. An idea can come at any time, so, always have a notepad near. These random scribbles I later transcribe and organize in my main notes.

A note document plotting the course of the story, an outline, and details about key sequences. I jot down whatever comes to mind here during the early phase. This is my master guide as I write.

I keep a note document for my characters, detailing their physical characteristics, relationships, interests, catch phrases, and character beats. This is my character bible that I reference across multiple books.

An Addendum document as I’m drafting and editing to jot down any additions I need to make to the book that I forgot or moments of inspiration that came later. As well as edits I wish to make.

Notes ensure every detail and need of my story is accounted for. Taking down notes also frees up mental space to move on to other thoughts and ideas. There’s a lot on our minds and more to think about than just the story. Notes are everything.

DEFACER - POST THANKSGIVING UPDATE

 A little update ...

Still working on Thanksgiving leftovers. Still writing.

Hey, everyone! A little update as we approach the end of the year. The writing continues even as life grows busier. We've been hard at work on the next novel, and giving it our all. Some days yield better results than others, but keeping to a schedule has kept the progress apace. We're passionate about this next project and we hope that passion will show through when you finally read it. More updates to come!

DEFACER AUTHOR CHRONICLES: Story Craft #3 - DRAFTING

 Story Craft #3:

Drafts are the various forms your story takes toward completion

Finishing the first draft is a wonderful feeling. There's a sense of accomplishment that your story, something that only ever existed in your head, is now real.

My books never turn out perfect on the first draft. That first draft is rough, ugly, and in need of a lot work, in addition to the technical edits.

There's things I've forgotten that need to be added, scenes that need reworked, inconsistencies to be corrected, character voices that need tweaked, and sometimes whole chapters that need excised.

The second draft makes my book readable for others. Once I get feedback from an editor or a trusted reader, then I go back for the third draft.

By then I've sat with the book for a while, and new ideas come to mind. Themes and character arcs start to emerge. I rework scenes to help enhance the themes and arcs therein, strengthening the story.

Then there's the fourth draft. Here's where I trim. Trim, trim, trim. Getting the word count down as low as possible without altering the story I originally set out to tell.

Fifth and sixths drafts follow. These aren't true new drafts, but quality checks before publishing. Even then, I still miss things. Reading my book in different formats helps me see errors I didn't see before. And even at this late stage, sometimes new scenes come to mind to be added.

It can feel long, but the end result is worth it.

A Successful Book Signing!

Hey everyone! Thank you all who turned out for the author signing event yesterday! The event was a big success and a lot of fun. Barnes and Noble was great to work with once again and all of the other authors in attendance were a joy to meet. So very grateful to everyone at Barnes and Noble who helped organize the event and we feel thankful to have been a part of it.

This marks the end of our scheduled events for the year, but next year there will be more. From all of us here at Blood Work, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the love and support you've given us over the years.
