This film focuses on the Earth's Self-Defense Forces more intently than any other. It manages to separate itself from the previous incarnations of Mechagodzilla and establish a military unit and hero that you actually care for and want to see win. In a wicked cool turn of events, the old Godzilla bones within Kiryu possess the armor and turns MechaG evil! Ultimately they regain control of Kiryu and the final epic showdown is worth every penny.
I liked the original Mechagodzilla from 1974. I didn't care very much for his 1993 reincarnation. But I think Kiryu is a nice blend of both. He's not as cool as a souless alien kaiju killing machine but he has WAY more going for him than the United Nations Mecha from 1993. And just like the original MechaG, he gets a sequel!
